Why Does Easter Change Date Every Year?

Easter’s moving date is one of the most commonly asked questions people have when searching days until Easter — and the answer lies in a 2,000-year-old calculation called the computus.

Easter falls on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after 21 March. The rule was established by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD to standardise Easter across the Christian world. Because it depends on both the lunar cycle and the solar calendar simultaneously, Easter shifts by up to five weeks from one year to the next.

The equinox is fixed at 21 March for calculation purposes regardless of when the astronomical equinox actually falls. The full moon used is the ecclesiastical full moon — based on a fixed 19-year cycle called the Metonic cycle — rather than the actual astronomical full moon. This is why Easter occasionally falls a day or two away from the full moon you can see in the sky.

The earliest Easter can ever fall is 22 March. The latest is 25 April. Easter on 22 March is extremely rare — it last occurred in 1818 and will not occur again until 2285.

Good Friday — marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus. It is observed as a solemn fast across many Christian traditions. Despite the word “good,” this is an archaic usage meaning “holy” — Good Friday means Holy Friday. It is a public holiday in the UK, Australia, Canada and many other countries.
