Percent Off Calculator

You are looking at a price tag. It says 30% off. You need to know what you actually pay — not approximately, but exactly — before you decide whether to buy. Mental maths is unreliable under pressure and a standard calculator requires three separate steps.

This free percent off calculator does it in one. Enter the original price and the percent off — the sale price, saving amount and step-by-step solution appear instantly.

How to Calculate Percent Off

The formula every percent off calculator uses:

Saving = Original price × (Percent off ÷ 100) Sale price = Original price − Saving

Example: A jacket costs $120 and is 30% off.

  • Saving = $120 × 0.30 = $36
  • Sale price = $120 − $36 = $84

Mental Maths — Quick Percent Off Shortcuts

When you need a rough figure fast:

10% off — move the decimal point one place left. 10% off $350 = $35 saving, you pay $315.

20% off — find 10% then double it. 20% off $350 = $70 saving, you pay $280.

25% off — divide the price by 4. 25% off $200 = $50 saving, you pay $150.

50% off — divide the price by 2. 50% off $180 = $90 saving, you pay $90.

5% off — find 10% then halve it. 5% off $80 = $4 saving, you pay $76.

15% off — find 10%, find 5%, add them. 10% of $60 is $6, 5% is $3, total saving = $9, you pay $51.

Is the Sale Price Always What You Pay?

Not always. Several situations can affect the final amount at checkout:
Sales tax — in the US, sales tax is added at checkout and varies by state. If the displayed price excludes tax the final amount will be higher than the percent off calculator result. In the UK, VAT is included in displayed prices so the percent off applies to the VAT-inclusive amount — no extra tax added at checkout.

Stacked discounts — combining a 20% off discount with an additional 10% off voucher does not equal 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, giving 28% off total. For stacked deals apply each discount sequentially — run the percent off calculator twice, using the first sale price as the starting price for the second discount.

Minimum spend conditions — some percentage discounts only apply above a certain basket value. Check the terms before calculating.

Rounded checkout prices — retailers sometimes round discounted prices slightly at checkout, particularly on amounts ending in .99.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract from the original price. Example: 25% off $80 — saving = $80 × 0.25 = $20, sale price = $80 − $20 = $60. Use the percent off calculator above to get the result and full working instantly.

20% off $50 saves you $10 so you pay $40. Working: $50 × 0.20 = $10 saving. $50 − $10 = $40 final price.

30% off $100 saves you $30 so you pay $70. Working: $100 × 0.30 = $30 saving. $100 − $30 = $70 final price.

50% off means you pay exactly half the original price. 50% off $200 = $100. 50% off $79.99 = $40.00. Enter any amount into the percent off calculator with 50 in the discount field to get the exact result.

Multiply the original price by (1 minus the decimal form of the discount). For 30% off multiply by 0.70. For 20% off multiply by 0.80. For 15% off multiply by 0.85. Or use the percent off calculator — enter the original price and discount percentage and the sale price appears immediately.

In the UK where VAT is included in displayed prices, percent off applies to the VAT-inclusive price. In the US where sales tax is added at checkout, percent off applies to the pre-tax price — tax is then calculated on the reduced amount.

They mean exactly the same thing and are completely interchangeable. Both describe a reduction of the original price by a given percentage.

10% off $200 saves you $20 so you pay $180. For any 10% off calculation move the decimal point one place left to get the saving, then subtract from the original price.

15% off $300 saves you $45 so you pay $255. Working: $300 × 0.15 = $45 saving. $300 − $45 = $255 final price.
