GPA Calculator — Free Online Grade Point Average Calculator

End of semester and you need to know where you stand. You have your grades and credit hours but converting letter grades to GPA points and weighted averages is more work than it should be. This free GPA calculator handles it instantly — enter your courses, select your letter grades and your GPA appears alongside a full step-by-step breakdown.
Three calculators in one GPA calculator: US GPA on the 4.0 scale, percentage to GPA conversion and CGPA on the 10-point scale used across South Asia.

How GPA Is Calculated

GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a weighted average of your grade points across all courses where courses with more credit hours carry more influence on the final result.
The formula:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points for each course = Grade points × Credit hours

Example: Three courses — Biology (A, 3 credits), Mathematics (B+, 4 credits), English (B, 3 credits):

What Is a Good GPA?

GPA calculation - GPA calculator

GPA benchmarks vary by institution and field of study but these are the generally accepted standards:
4.0 — Perfect GPA. Straight A grades in every course. Rare and highly competitive.
3.7 to 3.9 — Excellent. Consistently strong performance. Competitive for most graduate programs and scholarships.
3.5 to 3.6 — Very good. Above average across the board. Meets the minimum for many honours programs.
3.0 to 3.4 — Good. Solid academic standing. Meets most graduate school minimum requirements.
2.5 to 2.9 — Average. Satisfactory progress but may limit options for competitive programs.
2.0 to 2.4 — Below average. Most universities require at least 2.0 to remain in good standing.
Below 2.0 — At risk. Most institutions place students below 2.0 on academic probation.

How to Raise Your GPA

Raising a GPA takes time because early grades carry significant weight. A few practical strategies:

Retake low-scoring courses — many universities allow grade replacement where the new grade replaces the old one in your GPA calculation. Check your institution’s policy before retaking.

Prioritise high-credit courses — a course worth 4 credits affects your GPA more than a 1-credit course. Performing well in high-credit courses has the largest impact per course.

Use the GPA calculator to model targets — enter your existing grades then adjust remaining courses to see what grades you need to reach your target GPA. The earlier in your degree you do this the more achievable the target.

Understand the maths of late improvement — if you have 60 credits completed a single A in a 3-credit course moves your GPA by only about 0.05 points. Improvement at this stage requires sustained performance across many courses, not one good semester.

Percentage to GPA Conversion

Many institutions outside the US use percentage grades rather than letter grades. Here are the most common percentage ranges and their US GPA equivalents:

CGPA on the 10-Point Scale

Many universities in Pakistan, India and other South Asian countries use a 10-point CGPA scale rather than the US 4.0 scale. The CGPA tab calculates your grade point average out of 10 and automatically converts it to the US 4.0 equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most graduate programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. Competitive programs at top universities often expect 3.5 or higher. Professional schools such as medicine and law typically look for 3.7 and above. Requirements vary significantly by program and institution — always check the specific program’s requirements.

GPA (Grade Point Average) typically refers to a single semester or term average. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average across all completed semesters. In everyday usage the terms are often used interchangeably. This GPA calculator computes a weighted average for whichever courses you enter.

A 3.5 GPA corresponds to approximately 90 to 92% on the standard US grading scale — an A- letter grade. Exact percentage equivalents vary by institution since some schools give A- for 90-92% while others start A- at 88%.

A 3.0 GPA is a B on the US 4.0 scale. It corresponds to approximately 83 to 86% and is generally considered good academic standing. Many graduate programs use 3.0 as their minimum GPA requirement for admission.

A 2.5 GPA falls between a B- and a C+ on the US 4.0 scale and corresponds to approximately 78 to 80%. It is a passing GPA and most universities consider it satisfactory academic standing. However a 2.5 GPA may limit eligibility for merit scholarships, honours programs and competitive graduate school applications that typically require 3.0 or above.

Yes — use the CGPA tab in this GPA calculator. Enter your subjects, grade points out of 10 and credit hours. The calculator shows your CGPA and automatically converts it to the US 4.0 equivalent using the formula: US GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4.0. Note that US universities may use their own conversion tables — always check the specific institution’s requirements.

A weighted GPA assigns higher grade point values to more difficult courses such as honours, AP or IB classes. An A in an AP course might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0. This GPA calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale where an A is always worth 4.0 regardless of course difficulty.

A 4.0 GPA corresponds to 93% and above on the standard US grading scale — an A or A+ letter grade. Achieving a 4.0 GPA requires an A in every course throughout the semester.
