Time Duration Calculator — Hours Between Two Times

You clocked in at 8:30 AM and clocked out at 5:15 PM with a 45-minute lunch break. How many hours did you actually work? The mental maths takes longer than it should and the margin for error is real — especially when the minutes do not divide neatly.
This free tool gives you the exact answer instantly. Enter your start and end time, deduct any break, and get the duration in hours and minutes, decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds — all at once.

How to Calculate Hours Between Two Times

different time durations- time duration calculator

The formula is straightforward when both times are on the same day:
Duration = End time − Start time − Break time
For example, start at 9:00 AM, end at 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break:

  • End time in minutes: 17 × 60 + 30 = 1,050
  • Start time in minutes: 9 × 60 + 0 = 540
  • Raw duration: 1,050 − 540 = 510 minutes
  • Minus 30-minute break: 510 − 30 = 480 minutes
  • Result: 8 hours 0 minutes = 8.00 decimal hours

For overnight shifts the calculation adds 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. If your end time is earlier than your start time — for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM — the time duration calculator detects this automatically and shows an orange warning confirming the overnight calculation was applied.

Time Duration vs Date Difference — What Is the Difference?

A time duration calculator measures the gap between two times on the same day or across midnight — hours, minutes and seconds.
A date difference calculator measures the gap between two calendar dates — days, weeks, months and years.
Use the time duration calculator when you need hours and minutes between two clock times. Use the date difference calculator when you need days between two calendar dates.

Converting Minutes to Decimal Hours

Payroll systems, invoicing software and timesheets require decimal hours rather than hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your start and end time normally. If the end time is earlier than the start time — for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM — the time duration calculator automatically adds 24 hours to calculate the correct 8-hour overnight duration. An orange note confirms the overnight calculation was applied.

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. For example 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + (45 ÷ 60) = 7.75 decimal hours. The time duration calculator shows this automatically alongside the hours and minutes result.

9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is exactly 8 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch break deducted the net working time is 7 hours 30 minutes — 7.50 decimal hours.

8:30 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes — 8.50 decimal hours. With a 30-minute break deducted the net working time is 8 hours 0 minutes — 8.00 decimal hours.

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes — 8.50 decimal hours. With a 30-minute lunch break the net time is 8 hours 0 minutes — 8.00 decimal hours.

Hours and minutes is the standard clock format — 7 hours 45 minutes. Decimal hours expresses the same duration as a single number — 7.75. Payroll systems use decimal hours because they can be multiplied directly by an hourly rate to calculate gross pay.

7:00 AM to 3:00 PM is exactly 8 hours. With a 30-minute break deducted the net working time is 7 hours 30 minutes — 7.50 decimal hours.
